Eating Disorders, such as Anorexia Nervosa, Overeating/Binge Eating and Bulimia strike both males and females and are very serious. Although most people have heard that only adolescents are in danger of developing an eating disorder, this is not true. Unfortunately, adults are frequently being newly diagnosed with eating disorders. I commonly see men and women in my practice who did not have any such problem when they were young.
Adults who develop an eating disorder often begin by dieting to lose weight and then when they don’t get the results they were hoping for start to descend into self destructive behaviors. Ultimately, the underlying roots of these problems have to do with poor self esteem/self image. Often, I find that eating disorders can be coupled with life events. For instance after a divorce, an adult may decide they need to be thin to attract a new mate.
